Meretz-Yachad Youth
  Profile of the Youth Organization

The youth organization works in a variety of ways:
  •  Weekly activity: Members of the movement operate 11 nuclei around the country that are divided into seniors (grades 10 to 12), who are led by a team of communards serving in the organization within the framework of a year's national  service, and juniors (grades 8 and 9), who are led by youth counselors trained in the senior groups.  Each group holds a weekly meeting at which issues on the public agenda are discussed within the context of an overall one-year guidance program.
  • Seminars:  Several seminars are held during the year.  Each of these seminars, which are open to all the youth organization members, focuses on a specific issue that is discussed in depth.  The seminar consists of workshops and includes lectures by various politicians and academics.
  • Youth Leadership:  With the aim of developing a young leadership, each branch elects its own leaders (a chairman and, in some cases, also a deputy chairman), and every six months all members of the youth organization convene and elect a national youth chairman.  The national chairman and the branch chairmen convene at their discretion to discuss the movement's path and to coordinate activities.  The youth leadership is constantly guided and accompanied by a professional team from the organization.
  • Social and Political Involvement:  The principle of action lies at the heart of our educational worldview.  We believe that there is no room to talk about values without putting them into practice. Therefore, we stress the importance of social and political action alongside our internal educational activities.  We encourage members of the organization to be active citizens, to volunteer in community programs, and to create their own volunteer projects.  In the political sphere, our goal is to create young citizens who are aware of the various trends and processes within Israeli society and are capable of taking an educated and active stand. Our political activities are diverse and include demonstrations, direct appeals to decisionmakers, marches, dialogue meeting-points, rallies, dissemination of leaflets, and other programs planned by the youth.
  • National Service Program:  Six youths are currently active in the movement within the framework of national service.  They are high school graduates who volunteered to do a year's national service with

Meretz-Yachad Youth prior to their army service.  During their senior year, the candidates, all of whom are members of Meretz-Yachad Youth, undergo a six-month training period at the end of which the most suitable are selected for the program.  After graduation, these youths begin a year's volunteer service during which they lead youth groups and operate centers of community activity.  This important program is run in cooperation with the Youth and NAHAL Division.

Professional Staff Organizational Structure:

The professional staff is headed by a Youth Coordinator who is responsible for the overall management of the organization in accordance with the principles outlined above.  The various management and operational functions of the organization are carried out by volunteers and by a team of communards who participate in the day-to-day operational decisionmaking.  This practice is based on our belief in the importance of the national service program and in the involvement of young counselors in decisionmaking.
